A campaign is under way to recognise the anti-slavery campaigner Elizabeth Heyrick, born in Leicester in 1769. Heyrick was one of the UK’s most influential abolitionists, driven by her deep dissenting faith to hasten immediate emancipation after the trade in slaves was banned. A letter from the Elizabeth Heyrick Society appeared in last month’s Reform.
With the URC continuing to respond to the Legacies of Slavery, East Midlands and Leicestershire churches in particular may wish to celebrate this remarkable woman and perhaps support the society’s aim to raise a statue in her native city.
