Scattering good seeds
Many of our churches have been celebrating harvest and have probably sung ‘We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the ground’. These words got me thinking about other seeds.
We should be scattering our good seeds to pass our faith on.
I’ve recently visited the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London and the Council for World Mission (CWM).
They told us the history of SOAS and produced many documents of past missionaries who were sent out all over the world by the London Missionary Society (LMS).
We saw the record of Alice Young, who went out from our village (Enderby) as a teacher. She travelled by boat to Cape Town and then by bullock cart to Bechuanaland (Botswana): this journey took her six months! She was 26 years old, had only travelled as far as Leicester, yet had the faith to travel thousand of miles to spread the Gospel. She was supported, from a distance, by her family and church.
I also attended the Missionary Gathering at CWM’s office in London. It was a pleasure to hear the stories of our past missionaries who also travelled to distant places to spread the Gospel in different ways. We also heard from The Revd Dr Minwoo Oh (CWM Partner in Mission) on the work that Partners in Mission (no longer “missionaries”) are doing in this country, for example The Revd Yu-Fen Chen working as a chaplain to Taiwanese and Mandarin-speaking communities in London.
At harvest we reap what others have sown. Are you still sowing for others to reap?
