External Gutenberg Tutorials (Videos & Text)

A quick search of the internet shows that there are many video and text tutorials for Gutenberg.
Most of these are for the WordPress implementation, which looks a bit different from the Drupal version because Drupal does things differently from, and offers more than, WordPress.

In particular, the Drupal version uses . .

  • Drupal like styling - especially in the Settings and More Settings Panels
  • the Drupal content type Title in the settings panel rather than one embedded into the editor.
  • Drupal's Media Library for inserting images, documents, videos, audio etc.
This means you can re-use an existing image very easily - so try not to make duplicates.
  • Drupal's Image Styles to select the size of the image.
( look in the Settings panel: Block tab : Image Settings )
  • Drupal's Content Types, most of which are customised for the particular website (ours are!).

Some of the videos appear to be about earlier versions of Gutenberg which look quite different - Gutenberg is in continual development (Jan 24). Having said that information from the previous pages should clarify things.

Here are some videos and tutorials which might help.

  1. This OStraining video is specifically for Drupal. The link takes you past the installation and setting up bits to a brief demo 2m 20s in. A fuller tutorial from the same trainer can be found here. Both are for an older version and things have changed - for example block toolbars have changed a bit, and Gutenberg does now work with content types with fields.
  2. This tutorial Gutenberg Blocks and how to use them in Wordpress looks quite up to date, but you will still have to watch out for Wordpress/Drupal differences - such as where the page Title goes (in Drupal this is NOT in the main body - it is a mandatory field in the setting panel.
  3. This webpage - Overview and user’s guide to Gutenberg editor in Drupal - is a quick read
    - Just skip over anything to do with installing and setting up Gutenberg.
  4. Jan 20205 and Ivan Zugec of WebWash has just released this video about Drupal Gutenberg. Again the link should take you past the installation bits to the overview section. He does use the 3.0 beta version which we will install as soon as a release version arrives. It looks to be quite an improvement on the current version.
